This year’s SXSW was a musical roller coaster. Between tragic moments, vomiting fans, Bieber fever and potential riots– Austin explained why the saying ’things are bigger in Texas’ is live and true.
Whether you’re still recovering from an excessive amount of day parties or managed to continue onto St. Patrick Day celebrations, there were plenty of hits and miss moments to talked about for weeks to come.
Californian rockers Kiven redefined the word ‘underdog’ by captivating a crowd with their exhilarating unique sounds. The group offered a impeccable mix of head- bopping and sing along tracks that left even new fans wanting more. Fans cheered for an encore song as the band ended their final song at Soho Lounge.
The king of awkward questionable moments decided to make all the wrong decisions again: Justin Bieber stopped a showcase of artists to make sure the entire venue heard him sing a song that should never have been a hit. Bieber made a surprise visit to manager Scooter Braun’s party and sang his hit As Long As You Love Me while dedicating the song to Selena Gomez.
One the festivals most talked about moments comes from the dance-worthy gentlemen of Young The Giant, who not only lead the crowd in a sing a long to their song “My Body”, but learned to embrace the love of a crowd and crowd surfed at the end of their late night showcase at Stubbs.
Another talked about artist: Banks was a must see. A crowded Haven danced along to her hits as she proved to critics that female artists don’t just twerk or sing about being 22.
One of those disturbing moments of the festival is Lady Gaga’s regurgitating fan performance. Although it was revolting to see, Lady Gaga is one of the smartest marketing artists out today. Gaga has taken cue from her chart-topping competitors and has used her weirdness to market not only a brand, but a lifestyle that suits exactly the fans she’s embraced. She sums what her game plan is and said it best during her keynote speech: “Don’t sell out. Sell in.” Bravo Gaga.
Most heartbreaking moment of the festival was the tragic loss of now 3 concert attendees and injuries to more than twenty others. SXSW is about discovering new music and new friends. Our hearts go out to those lost, injured and affected by this horrific chain of events.
Most Surprising festival moment was Foxboro Hot Tubs sets. For those who weren’t aware Green day started the musical project back in 2007 but only recently have been making appearances under the name. Rumors of an appearance by the group came out months ago and were reaffirmed after the band’s amazing “surprise” showcase.
Underrated Canadian duo, Chromeo had the entire room dancing along to their set at Hype Hotel. It’s only a matter of time until the group are featured on radio stations and selling out arenas.
For those that stayed at home this year or have never gone you missed out on plenty more including: Jay-Z and Kanye West having a bromance performance, Kelis serving Food, Snoop being d-o double gg, iTunes festival with Coldplay, Woodies and hundreds of other amazing events.
Every year SXSW chooses one moment or performance that stuck out the most, this year no one can agree on the biggest moment but each performance stands out in their own way to make the most amazing South by Southwest to date. Congrats to every single artist that performed, until next year Austin, Tx: stay weird, fun and crazy.
